FAQs
What happens at my first appointment?
Your first appointment will consist of meeting with the therapist that you have chosen or was selected as a match for you. They will ask you questions and gather information to determine the nature of your presenting concerns so that they can develop an appropriate therapeutic plan for you. This session will last 50 minutes and will allow them to create a plan for intervention that will be most effective and efficient for you.
What is the difference between a Psychologist, Psychological Associate, Psychotherapist, and Social Worker?
Psychologists and Psychological Associates are both registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and are authorized to provide psychotherapeutic services as well as confer diagnoses. Psychotherapists and Social Workers are authorized to provide psychotherapeutic services. Psychotherapy and diagnosis are protected acts, which means only certain individuals who have been authorized to do so may engage in those acts. This is to protect the public and ensure that services that are delivered are safe.
What exactly is therapy?
Therapy in real life is not necessarily how you might have pictured it, especially if you have seen movies or television shows about therapy (e.g., Apple TV+’s show Shrinking). You will talk with your therapist, but therapy is not just talking. A skilled therapist will be listening to what your goals and needs are and will provide you with skills and strategies to meet those goals. It is an active and collaborative process.
